‘Welcome to Ibrox’ – Rangers fans react to top-flight midfielder contract development

By James Black

Rangers fans have reacted happily to the news that summer target Kenny McLean will not be signing a new contract at Aberdeen and will leave Pittodrie next year.

On Tuesday, Dons boss Derek McInnes confirmed McLean will leave Pittodrie at the end of the season when his deal runs out, meaning that the 25-year-old can sign a pre-contract with the Gers as soon as January.

The Daily Record reported earlier this month that Rangers were set to make a fresh pursuit of McLean in the January transfer window when he becomes free to talk to other clubs, but in Tuesday’s development it appears that the ball is now in the Gers’ court.

McLean started his career as a youth at Rangers before moving to St. Mirren where he made the breakthrough as a professional.

The midfielder then joined Aberdeen in 2015 and has made over 120 appearances for the Dons since.

Rangers fans are delighted to see the player possibly heading to Ibrox after the Gers had a £300,000 bid rejected for him over the summer, with one already assuming it’s a done deal by saying “welcome to Ibrox”.

McLean has been an important player for McInnes’ side and has helped them secure second-place in the Scottish top-flight over the last few years.

The midfielder has inexplicably been ignored by Scotland boss Gordon Strachan – winning a meagre one cap – despite being one of the best performers in the Scottish Premiership.

McLean’s former Aberdeen team-mate Ryan Jack made an identical move over the summer when he signed for Rangers after his Pittodrie contract expired.
