Rangers fans want Connor Goldson axed after ‘amazing’ twist – pundit

Rangers supporters will be “frustrated” if Connor Goldson returns to the starting line-up.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie claimed that Leon Balogun must keep his spot in the Gers’ backline ahead of Goldson after his “amazing” Scottish Cup semi-final display against Hearts on Sunday (21 April).

Goldson, 31, has been a mainstay this term having started 41 games in all competitions, while Balogun, 35, has been a bit-part player with just 15 starts.

However, Philippe Clement opted to name Balogun on his teamsheet in the 2-0 Hampden Park victory and his outing impressed fans and pundits alike.

Rangers ace Leon Balogun deserves more game time – McAvennie

After penning a one-year deal last summer, he is out of contract at the end of the season but recently admitted that “decisions [on his future] will be made within the club within the next few weeks”.

McAvennie claimed that the veteran deserves a new deal at Ibrox and wants to see him fielded more regularly throughout Rangers’ crucial final run-in.

“Balogun played very well against Hearts,” he told Football Insider.

“I don’t know what’s happened to Goldson, whether he’s been found out or if Clement is giving him a break.

“I think that Rangers fans will be frustrated if Goldson comes straight back in after Balogun’s performance now.

“Balogun was amazing along with John Souttar.

“Rangers are going to need all their players for this run-in, but I think he deserves a new deal despite his age.”
