Flop speaks out on Rangers troubles, turns career around with international call-up
By Alex Stevens
Rangers flop Luca Gasparotto is on course to win his first Canada cap in Scotland after reviving his career at Falkirk.
The centre-back, 21, found playing time hard to come by at Rangers during five years at the club and was widely regarded as not up to the mark.
But Gasparotto has turned his career around at Scottish Championship outfit Falkirk and has caught the eye of his national team.
The Bairns stopper is in line to make his full international debut against Gordon Strachan’s side at Easter Road on Wednesday.
He told the Scottish Sun: “Hopefully I should get on the pitch at some point, whether it be from the start or off the bench, and make my full debut.
“I’ve been waiting for it to come for a couple of years now but it would be pretty fitting if I was to make my debut here.”
Gasparotto made just four senior Rangers appearances in five years as he found himself down the defensive pecking order at the club.
But he impressed enough during loan spells at Airdie and Morton to secure a free transfer to Scottish Championship outfit Falkirk and has been a mainstay for the promotion chasers with 28 appearances in all competitions.
“I left Rangers last summer and that wasn’t too hard to be honest,” said Gasparotto, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “At my age, I just want to play and in all honesty it was going to be tough for me to make the breakthrough at Rangers.
“I played well last year on loan at Morton and when the opportunity to join Falkirk in the summer came up it was pretty much a no brainer to make the move.
“They had a great season last year and are still a big club.”
New manager Pedro Caixinha had a memorable first game in charge last weekend, as Rangers demolished Hamilton 4-0 in the Scottish Premiership at Ibrox.
But Celtic are marching on inexorably to the title and also have a domestic treble in their sights as they aim to maintain their grip on Scottish football.
In other Rangers news, one of the club’s midfielders has agreed the terms of a mammoth new deal.
