Rangers forgotten man could get surprise chance to win reprieve under Gerrard
COMMENT
Rangers defender Fabio Cardoso has rarely been sighted in a Gers shirt since having his nose smashed across his face in October – but the defender could get a surprise chance to prove himself when the Light Blues get their Europa League campaign gets underway in July.
Cardoso started the season as a mainstay under Pedro Caixinha but has struggled for games since Caixinha’s sacking just before Halloween.
With Bruno Alves almost certain to miss the start of the campaign thanks to his involvement in the World Cup with Portugal, Cardoso could be only one of two senior defenders available to Steven Gerrard’s side when they begin competitive action.
Cardoso seemed to go from one extreme to the other with his performances and could never find any real level of consistency despite having some impressive performances – although incredibly, his partnership with Bruno Alves actually conceded fewer goals per game than any other defensive pairing the Light Blues went with all season.
Unless the Light Blues can get a number of defenders into the squad over the coming weeks then Cardoso may well find himself thrust into a surprise starting spot when Gerrard picks his first competitive starting XI as Gers manager on July 12th.
