Rangers handed ‘100 per cent’ boost v Celtic after confirmed news – pundit

Rangers have handed themselves a significant boost ahead of Sunday’s clash with Celtic by announcing their withdrawal from the Sydney Super Cup, according to Noel Whelan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen hitman suggested the Ibrox crowd will be a “lot happier” on Sunday after the news.

In a statement issued on Thursday (31 March), Rangers confirmed they have terminated their agreement to appear in the friendly tournament in November.

The proposal, which would have seen Rangers and Celtic face off down under, had come under fire from supporters.

Rangers fans protested the decision by throwing tennis balls and toilet paper on the pitch against Dundee.

Whelan suggested the Gers had chosen the ideal time to announce the news.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “The right decision. The right time to announce it as well, just before the big game at Ibrox.

“I’m sure the fans will be in good spirits and a lot happier when they’re walking into the stadium. No protests outside the stadium.

“Everyone can concentrate on what a great spectacle it’s going to be with the Old Firm game.

“You want 100 per cent focus and support from the fans, as one with the club, at times like this. I’ve always said it’s going to be decided by who comes out on top in Old Firm games as to who wins the title this year?

“No protests, no more balls being thrown onto the field. It’s all about the football now. This game could pull them back level.”
