‘Rangers handed Danny Rohl boost amid Will Still to Southampton development’

Rangers have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl after a major development regarding Southampton’s pursuit of Will Still.

Following the mid-season departure of Philippe Clement, Barry Ferguson took charge at Ibrox and steadied the ship.

Whilst the Bears’ domestic form remained underwhelming, the club’s former captain guided them to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Cyriel Dessers was the victim of a questionable refereeing decision as Rangers fell at the hands of Athletic Club.

Ferguson was keen to remain in charge at Ibrox on a permanent basis, Alan Hutton revealed to Football Insider exclusively, but the club decided to move on from the 47-year-old after the Bears’ final game of the season against Hibernian.

Several high-profile names have been linked with the job, including Jose Mourinho and Sean Dyche, but having identified Sheffield Wednesday’s boss Rohl for the job, the Bears found themselves in a tussle with recently-relegated Southampton for the German boss.

Will Still set to become new Southampton manager

As reported by Sky Sports, Will Still has signed a contract to become Southampton‘s new manager, replacing interim boss Simon Rusk.

The 32-year-old had recently become available, having left RC Lens in France after one year at the club and was highly sought after.

Given the riches afforded to Premier League clubs, and the parachute payments that help soften the blow of relegation, Southampton is an attractive job for many managers looking for a route into the Premier League.

Rohl has openly talked about his willingness to leave The Owls this summer [BBC Sport], in spite of having a contract that runs until 2027.

The German boss had been linked with the Southampton job, but with Still set to take over, that has provided Rangers a major boost in their pursuit of the 36-year-old.

Rangers in the clear to entice Danny Rohl to Ibrox

Aberdeen’s former CEO, Keith Wyness revealed exclusively to Football Insider that Rangers are willing to shell out a “seven-figure” fee to secure Rohl’s signature.

The German boss’ ability to oversee major periods of transition will be enticing to the Bears’ hierarchy.

Rohl took over at Hillsborough with the club in freefall and seven points from safety, and guided them to survival last season before finishing 12th this year.

Rangers find themselves playing second-fiddle to a dominant Celtic side, but with Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises’ takeover drawing close, the Bears are looking to quickly close the gap to their Old Firm rivals.

Rohl is one of the Championship’s hottest managerial prospects, and if the Gers’ hierarchy thinks he can be the man to place Rangers back atop of Scottish football’s podium, they should move quickly as he won’t be available for long.
