Rangers have already signed James Tavernier’s replacement after what expert has just seen
Alan Hutton has insisted James Tavernier needs competition at Rangers.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender is pleased with the arrival of Dujon Sterling and is hopeful it will force Tavernier to up his game.
Last week (30 May), the Light Blues confirmed the signing of Sterling, 23, on a pre-contract agreement from Chelsea following the expiration of his contract.
The right-back put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Ibrox and will officially link up with the squad next month.
On 27 May, Football Insider revealed that the Gers were lining up the announcement of Sterling and were waiting for Chelsea’s season to conclude before doing so.
Sterling is believed to have snubbed offers of a new contract from the Blues, as well as a permanent offer from loan club Stoke City, in favour of a move to Glasgow.
The versatile defender is Michael Beale’s second signing of the summer window so far, after Norwich City’s Kieran Dowell, and his fourth signing since has arrival at Rangers at the back end of 2022.
Hutton is pleased to see some competition coming in for current number one right-back Tavernier.
“I think he is good and I think he ticks all the boxes for Michael Beale moving forward and what his plans are for the squad.

“He wants that young, more energetic footballer that he can mould and shape into what he sees fit for the team.
“Sterling coming in as a right wing-back who can play multiple positions, Tavernier needs competition moving forward, so I think it is a good signing.“
In other news, another Rangers exit confirmed as official paperwork filed.
