Rangers have surely now made their minds up on Jack Butland contract extension

Rangers should not give Jack Butland a new contract after his recent poor display against Livingston.

The Gers drew 2-2 against the Scottish Premiership’s bottom side on Sunday, and while they came from behind to rescue a point, it was a terrible result.

Many players vastly underperformed, with one of the worst suspects being Butland.

Speculation is currently high regarding the future of the 32-year-old goalkeeper, with his contract set to expire in 2027.

However, his performance against Livingston showed exactly why the Gers should look to find a new number one in the summer, with the keeper proving to be unreliable on a consistent basis.

Jack Butland once again underperforms vs Livingston

Butland’s recent performances haven’t been much to shout about, and this was on display once again against Livingston.

The goalkeeper conceded twice despite making just one save, resulting in a goals prevention rate of -1.26.

For both of the hosts’ goals, the keeper should have done better. The opener was at Butland’s near post, and should have been a simple save.

In comparison, his positioning for Lewis Smith’s strike allowed him to bury the ball with ease to make it 2-0.

With multiple teams in the Scottish Premiership now proving to be a challenge, Rangers simply cannot afford to have a keeper this unreliable.

Therefore, they should not look to renew his contract at present, and instead examine potential alternatives in the market for the 2026-27 campaign.

What are Butland’s stats this season?

According to Fotmob on 23 February, the goalkeeper does have some solid stats in the Scottish Premiership this season.

He currently has a 78.9 per cent save rate and has kept 11 clean sheets.

However, he has also made three errors that have led to goals, a terrible record for a Rangers goalkeeper.

Save percentage78.9%
Clean sheets 11
Errors leading to goals 3
Goals conceded 23

Therefore, it is clear that while Butland is a solid keeper, Rangers could certainly do better if they wanted to.

This could prove to be the difference for the Gers going forward, especially if they want to dominate Scottish football for the next few years, with Celtic on a clear decline.

However, it remains to be seen if they choose to replace Butland in the upcoming summer transfer window.
