Rangers in hunt for brilliant playmaker from top-flight club as recruitment drive steps up – reliable journalist

Rangers are in the hunt to sign Hamilton midfielder Greg Docherty this month, according to a reliable journalist.
Scottish Sun reporter Andy Devlin claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that the Light Blues are interested in Docherty, 21, who has impressed at their SPFL rivals this season with his brilliant playmaking abilities.
It is also understood that Brighton forward Jamie Murphy remains on the Glasgow clubs radar as they step up their January recruitment drive after Sean Goss was signed on loan until the end of the season from QPR on Wednesday.

Docherty has been in top form for Hamilton in the Scottish top-flight this season and even played a starring role in helping the Accies beat Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox in November.
The Scotland Under-21 international has made 25 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring three goals and supplying six assists in the process.
Docherty has represented Scotland at two different youth levels but has previously admitted that he may switch allegiances to play for the Republic of Ireland in the future.
“I’ve always known I was eligible for Ireland but if they are sniffing about me then that is very flattering,” he said, as quoted by the Irish Independent in September.
He added: “It’s something I need to think about and take some time to consider. I wouldn’t jump into a decision like that. I’d prefer to sit down with my family and work out what’s right for me.
“Playing for Ireland would be different. It might be good but I don’t know. I’ll just try to keep playing well for Hamilton and if I catch the eye of these teams then great, if not, I’ll focus on Accies.”
Football Insider verdict
Docherty looks like a good young player with bags of potential and could easily slot into the first-team right now. With Graham Dorrans, Ryan Jack and Jordan Rossiter all injured, Graeme Murty needs at least one or two midfielders to be snapped up this month, especially with doubts surrounding the future of Carlos Pena. Andy Halliday has been brought back from his loan at Gabala and even though he is more experienced, Rangers are better off taking a punt on Docherty, who could be a play who can play for the Light Blues for a very long time. The Gers best make a move quickly though because Celtic are hoovering up all the best young talent in Scotland at the moment.
In other Rangers news, the Gers hierarchy are in discussions after a shock bid was made for this 27-year-old.
