Rangers keep tabs on emerging PL midfielder – report
By Danny Wright
Rangers are interested in signing Manchester United youngster Matty Willock, according to a report.
ESPN claims that their sources have said the Light Blues are keeping tabs on the 20-year-old, who broke into the United first team last season.
The emerging Premier League midfielder was handed a place on Jose Mourinho’s bench on two occasions towards the end of the campaign, but failed to earn his senior debut against both West Brom and Crystal Palace.
Pedro Caixinha hasn’t been afraid to make additions to his Rangers squad this summer, but he hasn’t really brought anyone in who is yet to reach their potential.
Experienced stars such as Bruno Alves and Graham Dorrans have secured switches to Ibrox, but none are as young as Willock, who will celebrate his 21st birthday in August.
The playmaker has been an integral part of Man United’s Under-23 side in recent seasons, as last term saw him turn out 21 times in Premier League 2, scoring two goals in derby clashes against both Manchester City and Liverpool.
Football Insider Verdict
Willock definitely has the ability to become a good Scottish Premiership footballer in the future. Not many players reach the age of 20 and still have a place at Manchester United after progressing through their academy, so Willock must be doing something right. Caixinha might be able to get a deal done due to Jose Mourinho, as their pair are both Portuguese and could be willing to help each other out on the odd occasion. Both are in similar circumstances at the respective clubs, as they try to restore former glories and beat their rivals to the league title. It’s been a very busy summer at Ibrox, and it doesn’t look like it’s about to calm down any time soon.
