Rangers lambasted for ‘real mistake’ after ‘outrageous’ Ibrox controversy – pundit
Noel Whelan has called for Rangers to “take responsibility” after “very damaging” fan incidents which marred their Old Firm defeat on Sunday (3 April).
The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Gers must review their “processes and safety policies” after glass bottles were thrown onto the Ibrox pitch.
The second half of Rangers’ 2-1 defeat against Celtic was delayed by five minutes after bottles were thrown onto the pitch, while a Hoops employee needed stitches after being struck by a bottle thrown from the stands.
Former Celtic striker Andy Walker, who was commentating on the match for Sky Sports, branded the scenes “outrageous” and “shameful” live on air.
Police Scotland have confirmed (4 April) they are probing the incidents and have appealed for information from supporters.
Whelan insisted he is confident those responsible will face punishment.
“I’m sure they will identify these people and take the relevant action,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“It’s a small minority of fans throwing bottles, but unfortunately – it’s something which was very damaging.
“The club have got to take responsibility. There shouldn’t be any bottles in the stadium.
“Usually you’re checked thoroughly on the way into the ground, so that is a real mistake by the football club.
“Not only do the culprits need to be punished, but Rangers as a club need to look at themselves, their processes, and safety policies.”

On the pitch, Tom Rogic and Cameron Carter-Vickers’ goals handed Celtic a 2-1 win after Aaron Ramsey’s opener.
The Hoops are now six points clear atop the Scottish Premiership.
