‘Rangers line up Derek McInnes as Barry Ferguson replacement’

Rangers already have two names in mind as Barry Ferguson’s successor as he takes on the role of interim manager until the end of the season, according to Ben Jacobs.

The Ibrox hierarchy has finally pulled the trigger on Philippe Clement’s tenure, which Patrick Stewart was expected to do upon his Rangers appointment in November.

Instead, the Belgian’s time at Ibrox has ended in embarrassment, firstly losing to Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup before failing to take advantage of Celtic’s 2-1 defeat to Hibernian.

The Light Blues showed no fight or passion as they were beaten 2-0 by St Mirren on Saturday (22 February), which ultimately led to the club finally parting ways with Clement.

Derek McInnes and David Wagner on Rangers radar for permanent Ibrox role

According to Ben Jacobs, both Derek McInnes and David Wagner are names under consideration to become the permanent Gers manager ahead of next season.

This comes after the appointment of Ferguson as Clement’s successor until the end of the current campaign, with the Light Blues 13 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.

Ibrox could be under new ownership by this time, with the San Francisco 49ers hoping to complete their Rangers takeover within the next six weeks.

Barry Ferguson can steady the Rangers ship for now

If Ferguson can get the current squad playing as he did during his time with the Gers, there should be no issues with the passionate, and rather frustrated, fanbase until the end of the season.

The Union Bears have finally had their wish granted, though like the majority of fans, will still feel as though the hierarchy waited far too long to make a decision.

With zero chance of catching their Old Firm rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, all focus should shift to getting as far in this season’s Europa League as possible.

Ending the campaign on a high note could be extremely important, especially if the 49ers are to come in and make an instant impact, and Ferguson will be confident he can deliver exactly that during his short spell in charge.
