Rangers make another demand for investigation into Scottish football authorities

Rangers have demanded an independent investigation into the relationship between the SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan and Celtic’s biggest shareholder Dermot Desmond after the SPFL boss was appointed to the board of a media company owned by Desmond.

The Gers have previously called for an investigation into Scottish FA director Gary Hughes after it emerged he had referred to Gers fans as “the great unwashed” in a trade magazine 12 years ago.

The Ibrox giants released a lengthy statement on their website calling for MacLennan to be suspended while an independent investigation is undertaken by a senior QC.

Rangers are also wanting to know about what was known – and by whom – over the appointment, claiming the two incidents leave the “credibility” of Scottish football at stake.

Football Insider verdict:

The Gers are entirely right to be calling for an investigation into the relationship between Desmond and MacLennan and any potential conflict of interest and subsequent non-disclosure. After the hoops the Gers have been made to jump through over the last six years by those at the top of the Scottish game, it is only right that they themselves provide the same transparency they have demanded of the Ibrox giants. The Gers will no doubt have ruffled some feathers at Hampden with their latest calls for an investigation. While the business relationship between MacLennan and Desmond may be entirely above board the Gers have every right to ask the question and demand an explanation into it. Whether the authorities actually take any action remains to be seen but Gers chairman Dave King has now put the ball firmly in their court and ramped the pressure up by going public with their complaints.
