Rangers match postponement: Keith Hackett drops verdict after Scottish FA call

Keith Hackett believes the decision to postpone the start of the recent Rangers and Dundee United game was made with safety in mind.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former PGMOL chief, ex-FIFA, and Premier League referee believes delaying games is “always a difficult area for referees.”

The Gers and Dundee United battled out a 1-1 draw at Ibrox Stadium, but the game kicked off one hour late due to Storm Bert’s impact.

Significant travel disruption meant that Dundee United couldn’t get to the ground on time, meaning their preparations were impacted, but Hackett is adamant the right decision was made.

Rangers game was delayed with player safety in mind

Hackett told Football Insider, “This is always a difficult area for referees.

“He has to make certain the pitch is safe.

“He’s also involved with FA officials, they’d have done checks in terms of pavements around the ground and checked for snow around the seating areas.

“He’s in constant contact with the Scottish FA and the ground commander he’s guided to some degree by them.

“The referee has made every effort to get this game on along with the ground staff.

“What’s important is the players are given sufficient warm-up time to avoid injuries, the warm-up process is so important for the help of players.

“If Dundee United are concerned with that situation, they should take it up with the Scottish FA.”
