Rangers may have withdrawn new contract offer after confirmed talks held – pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Rangers may have put new contract talks on ice following Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s appointment.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen striker insisted every player at Ibrox would be under scrutiny from the new manager.

Van Bronckhorst was announced as the new Ibrox boss on Thursday.

He arrives with Steve Davis, Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Connor Goldson all out of contract at the end of the season.

Speaking to STV in October, Steven Gerrard confirmed talks were ongoing over a new deal for Goldson.

However, Whelan suggested any proposals may have been withdrawn and talks put on ice following the change of manager.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “This is a big time for the players because they either get a contract or they won’t.

“There are two sides of the coin here. The manager will be assessing what players that he wants at the football club.

“There might have been contracts on the table under Steven Gerrard as manager. That doesn’t mean there’s going to be contracts on the table under Van Bronckhorst.

“They’re coming to the end of their contracts now. It’s important the players go out there and prove their worth to him.”

While contract discussions were underway with Goldson, Arfield confirmed talks were yet to start over a possible new deal for him.

The Canada international, 33, played 14 times this season before Gerrard’s exit.

Davis and McGregor have also been mainstays in the side this term.

In other news, another Rangers coach has been tipped to quit after confirmed news on Monday.
