This is what Rangers must do to finish second in Scottish Premiership
COMMENT
Rangers returned to second in the Scottish Premiership with a 4-0 win over Dundee at Ibrox on Saturday – but Graeme Murty’s side now can’t afford to drop any more points in the race to finish best of the rest behind Celtic.
After Aberdeen leapfrogged the Gers in midweek, the Dons blew their lead by losing 2-0 to Hearts on Tynecastle on Saturday to open the door for Murty’s side to return to second on goal difference.
With the Scottish Premiership splitting into two groups after this weekend, the Gers will only face other top six teams over the coming weeks and simply can’t afford to drop any points.
The Gers now face a wait to find out their remaining fixtures but with a trip to Celtic Park to come and a clash with Aberdeen, the Light Blues have it within their own control to finish second this season ahead of Derek McInnes’ side.
Despite there not really being any tangible benefit to finishing second – both sides enter the Europa League at the same stage and the difference in prize money is negligible – pipping the Dons would at least represent progress for the Gers after coming third last term.
Coming second could also represent the last chance Murty has to stake a claim for the manager’s job on a long-term basis although many would argue that ship has already sailed for the Gers boss.
In other Rangers news, Celtic are in the running to sign this former Light Blues player in a shock summer transfer.
