Rangers must make strong push to beat PL club to signing of Barcelona outcast

Rangers are set to have a huge summer as Pedro Caixinha looks to make massive improvements to his current crop of players in order to close down the gap to Old Firm rivals Celtic.

One of the main areas of concern at Ibrox is in defence and Caixinha must bring in a player who has a wealth of experiences as well as the talent to halt the opposing attack.

A centre-back that Rangers should take a look at is Barcelona outcast Thomas Vermaelen, who according to the Sun, is currently wanted by Premier League club Watford.

The Hornets have nowhere near the reputation that the Gers can boast so they might be able to tempt the 60-times Belgium international away from the Nou Camp.

Vermaelen has spent the season on loan at Roma but has shown that sort of level of football may now be beyond his capabilities, having made just 12 appearances for the Serie A club all season, who are understood to be set to pass on the chance to trigger an option-to-buy clause.

At 31-years-of-age, Vermaelen has earned a lot of experience during his career making 150 appearances for Arsenal, 143 for Ajax and 21 for Barca.

He is also a routine winner of silverware, lifting the FA Cup, two La Liga titles and the FIFA Club World Cup.

There’s no doubt that Vermaelen also has the ability to step straight into Caixinha’s first-team and if he can steer clear of any injury problems, he can no doubt become a star of the club over the next few years.

Players like Frank De Boer and Giovanni Van Bronkhorst have both been players that have played for both Gers and Barca, which shows that the Ibrox club holds the reputation to get players like Vermaelen.
