Rangers have surely been left with no choice but to sack Danny Rohl after his team were beaten 3-1 away at Celtic on Sunday afternoon. 

The Gers succumbed to their bitter rivals in the final Old Firm derby of the season, as they were unable to stand in the way of the Bhoys’ bid to secure a fifth consecutive Scottish Premiership title.

Mikey Moore netted the opener for the visitors in the eighth minute, before Hyun-Jun Yang levelled midway through the first half. 

Rangers then fell apart in the second half, as Daizen Maeda struck a double to seal the win, including a remarkable overhead kick. 

It has been a hugely disappointing few weeks for the Ibrox outfit, as a campaign that has promised so much in recent months has ultimately ended in a familiar sinking feeling. 

Rangers’ latest defeat to Celtic is set to prompt yet another inquest, and the boss’ position will surely be under even more scrutiny than ever before. 

Danny Rohl has failed Rangers by missing out on crucial milestone

Rohl’s future has already been subject to plenty of speculation in recent weeks, as strong links have emerged for him to take the job at Wolfsburg at the end of the season.

Rangers should now be about to make their life that little bit easier by parting company with Rohl and leaving him as a free agent at the start of the summer. 

The board will undoubtedly be hugely concerned by the way that Rohl’s men surrendered to their rivals in the second half, as their dismal display appeared to see many in their ranks down tools way too early.

The former Sheffield Wednesday chief has delivered plenty of promise since taking the reins at Ibrox, but the club desperately need someone to help drastically change their fortunes around for good, and he has been unable to do that. 

Rangers are set for another trophyless season, despite the improvements under the German, and the failure to secure a Champions League spot will hurt them long-term.

They are unlikely to be able to nail down their top targets for the summer window without the financial boost that competition would provide, and as a result, they are already on the back foot heading into next season. 

With that in mind, they are surely now left with no option but to give Rohl the boot, considering that his work has arguably already had a detrimental effect on next term.

Alan Nixon confirmed via his Patreon account on Sunday that the Gers are “considering” a fresh move for the Liverpudlian, having previously tried to appoint him after sacking Russell Martin. 

Gerrard’s availability only sees the evidence weigh up even further against Rohl, as Rangers have a ready-made replacement waiting, and he would be a hugely popular appointment.
