Finance guru drops £58m Rangers/Celtic reveal as ‘low cost’ Hoops slammed

There has been a £58million revenue swing from Celtic to Rangers since 2018 and the Hoops are paying the price for their lack of ambition during their rivals’ lengthy slump.

That is according to finance guru and new Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after Rangers re-extended their lead atop the Scottish Premiership to a cavernous 23 points.

Celtic have won nine titles in a row as Rangers clawed their way back from the brink of financial oblivion following the club’s liquidation in 2012.

But with the Hoops dominance coming to an end, questions have inevitably been raised over the club’s handling of their huge financial advantage over their rivals.

Maguire says Celtic have generally done things on-the-cheap over the last decade given the lack of competition from Rangers.

Asked if Celtic have been good value for money over the past nine years, Maguire told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “If we take a look at the last couple of years, they [Celtic] have gone from having a £69m revenue advantage over Rangers in 2018 and that had fallen to £11m in 2020.

“For a number of years when Rangers weren’t in the Premiership, Celtic had to do very little to win the title. Therefore, in my opinion, they settled for low-cost options.

“If they had invested more in terms of facilities and the squad itself, they could have made a quasi-glass-ceiling that others really would have struggled to push through.”

A boardroom reshuffle is expected at Parkhead following the retirement of 17-year Chief Executive Peter Lawwell.

While it may have come to a bitter end, Lawwell’s reign saw Celtic win a staggering 29 trophies.
