Rangers news: Celtic hero issues two-word verdict on latest Euro masterclass after Red Star win

Frank McAvennie has begrudgingly said “well done” to Rangers after their latest European masterclass.

The former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the Gers “through gritted teeth”.

Rangers have one foot in the Europa League quarter-finals after beating Red Star Belgrade 3-0 on Thursday (10 March).

Goals from James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos and Leon Balogun sealed a convincing win at Ibrox.

With Rangers favourites to progress to the quarter-finals and with Borussia Dortmund’s scalp already in the bag, McAvennie has been left with no choice but to offer his praise.

“You would think that’s them through and fair play to them,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“They can’t put the kids out next week but you expect them to go through.

“They haven’t really had a rest so that will work against them. There will have to be rotation.

“Rangers have a deep squad though so it is a good opportunity to give some of those other players a European night.

“I have to admit, through gritted teeth, Rangers are doing really well in Europe.

“You can’t say anything else other than ‘well done’ to them. Van Bronckhorst has them playing so well.”

Rangers

Rangers can expect Red Star to threaten in Thursday’s (17 March) away leg after the side had three goals ruled out at Ibrox.

The Gers are next in action against Dundee in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals on Sunday (13 March).

In other news, Rangers “will get loads of money” after “huge Ibrox development”.
