Rangers news: Ex-manager cites Harry Kane amid ‘massively important’ Ibrox claim

Alex McLeish has claimed Alfredo Morelos is “relied upon too much” at Rangers.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, drew comparisons between the 25-year-old and Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

Morelos has contributed to 32% of Rangers’ league goals this term, while Kane has had a hand in 31% of Tottenham’s Premier League strikes in this campaign (as per Transfermarkt).

The Colombian striker played a key role yet again as the Ibrox club defeated St Johnstone on Wednesday (2 March).

Morelos hit the woodwork, made three key passes, and notched the assist for Glen Kamara’s winner during the 1-0 away triumph (per SofaScore).

McLeish insisted the pressure has increased on the 25-year-old to score “every single game” with the likes of Kemar Roofe enduring various injury problems.

“Listen, like Harry Kane at Tottenham, Morelos is probably relied upon too much,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Last year when they won the title, Kemar Roofe scored about 15 or 16 goals and he was massively important. This year, he’s not had as much action.

“There’s been a distinct change in pressure on Morelos to score every single game.

You see good bits when he comes deep and links with the attackers going in behind – and that’s what we need to see a lot more of.

“I think the pitch was a bit slow against St Johnstone, but it’s no excuse. Rangers have been stumbling since that brilliant result in Europe.”

Morelos has netted 18 goals and provided eight assists in 37 games across all competitions this term.

The striker is contracted at Ibrox until May 2023.
