Rangers news: Expert issues ‘massive’ VAR claim as ‘unbelievable’ controversy analysed
Noel Whelan has suggested Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s latest calls for the introduction of VAR are simply “excuses”.
The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 47-year-old “can’t blame everything” on poor refereeing.
Rangers let a 2-0 lead slip at Ibrox yesterday (27 February), slumping to an eventual 2-2 draw against Motherwell.
As quoted by the Daily Record post-match, Van Bronckhorst insisted his side “would have won” if VAR was in operation during the clash.
The Dutchman claimed the decision to add just three minutes of injury time was “unbelievable”.
Whelan suggested every team in the Scottish Premiership is in the same boat as Rangers.
“It’s just excuses at this point,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“They didn’t defend properly in the game. They were two-nil up.
“He can’t blame everything on VAR. The defending was slack and they were cruising.
“That’s a go-to line isn’t it – blaming it on VAR. It’s the same for Motherwell and the other teams in the division – I’m sure every team has had their fair share of decisions go against them this season.
“Look, right now they need to do their job better. They should’ve had the three points in the bag yesterday and they’ve missed a massive opportunity to close the gap.
“He can’t keep turning to this same excuse. They will get VAR, I believe they should get VAR – but yesterday was not the fault of VAR, they should’ve been out of sight.”

Rangers’ draw meant they failed to close the gap to Celtic – who had also dropped points yesterday against Hibernian.
The void between the two sides remains three points with the rivals set to face off again on 3 April.
