Rangers news: Expert slams ‘crazy’ SPFL as controversial footage analysed
Noel Whelan has insisted he “can’t believe” the Scottish Premiership hasn’t implemented the use of VAR as Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst calls for change.
The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed VAR should come “as standard” if the Scottish top-flight wants to be a “reputable league”.
Van Bronckhorst has been vocal in his backing of the introduction of VAR and spoke to Rangers club media in favour of its implementation in the wake of their famous Europa League win against Dortmund last week (18 February).
The Gers boss again called for change in Scotland after his side saw two penalty appeals waved away during a 1-1 draw against Dundee United on Sunday (20 February).
Quoted by the Daily Record post-match, Van Bronckhorst said “VAR will make it easier for these decisions which can be turning points”.
When asked if VAR would be a good addition to the Scottish game, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Yeah, absolutely.
“When you’re talking about the top leagues, whether that’s at home or abroad – there’s no doubt that VAR should come as standard.
“It costs clubs money, it costs them games, it costs them titles. If you’re going to keep up with the Jones’ and be a reputable league in the game of football – you’ve got to implement these kinds of things.
“It’s called the Scottish Premiership for a reason. I can’t believe they haven’t already at least considered putting VAR in, it’s crazy.

“Why shouldn’t Scottish football have everything that the English Premier League has?
“They’ve got to get that in as soon as possible. Whether your fighting relegation or going for the title – it’s so important to your fortunes.”
