Rangers news: Hutton issues verdict on axing Allan McGregor after ‘ridiculous’ development

Alan Hutton has slammed “ridiculous” calls for Rangers to drop veteran goalkeeper Alan McGregor.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 40-year-old should remain number one until his Ibrox departure.

McGregor has come under fire after Motherwell’s Kaiynee Woolery slotted past him at his near post to seal a 2-2 draw for the North Lanarkshire side on Sunday (27 February).

Speaking in his Daily Express column (28 February), former Scotland star Charlie Nicholas claimed the shot-stopper is looking “vulnerable” and insisted he needs to be “taken out of the firing line” by Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

When asked if McGregor should be dropped, Hutton told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Not for me, no.

“It’s amazing how people can comment and judge based off one performance, it’s ridiculous.

“I don’t think he was to blame for that second goal against Motherwell. It was at his near post, but the boy had hit it so hard that he barely had time to react.

“The amount of saves this guy has made throughout the years, and even during that Dortmund game, is incredible.

“People are just so quick to criticise. Yes, Jon McLaughlin has done well when he’s come in – but right now, Allan McGregor should be number one.

“That’s the way it should be until he decides to move on or retire.”

Rangers

McGregor is out of contract at Ibrox at the end of the season.

The former Hull goalkeeper has kept 12 clean sheets across 32 games in all competitions this term.
