Rangers news: Hutton reveals Mohamed Diomande’s new playing position
Mohamed Diomande will play as a number six for Rangers despite professing he can play across midfield.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton claimed manager Philippe Clement will have a “headache” with his midfield selection due to the options at his disposal, but tipped the January signing to play deeper.
Diomande arrived at Ibrox on loan from FC Nordsjaelland, with the club expected to pay a reported £4.5million fee to make his move permanent next summer.
The 22-year-old, who has so far made three appearances for the Gers, claimed he can play in the number six, eight and 10 positions.
Rangers ace Mohamed Diomande claims he can play across midfield, but Hutton believes Philippe Clement will play him deep
However, Hutton claimed that the number six position would suit the Ivory Coast under-21 international best in Clement’s system, but was confident the boss would allow him to make progressive runs to contribute to the attack.
“I think with everything that’s going on in central midfield, he had to play more advanced [against Ayr United],” he told Football Insider.
“I think it’s difficult at the moment to see where he really fits in.
“Watching the game, Diomande was more than capable of making those runs in behind.
“He can play across the midfield as a six, eight or 10.
“But he won’t be a 10 in this team, so for me, he’ll probably be a six.
“But Clement will give him that license to make bursts forward.
“If he has the likes of Lundstram there, he can make those runs.
“Clement has lots of options, he’s going to have a headache.

“He has all these players playing at a high level, but you can only pick 11 players.
“But we’ve seen really good glimpses of Diomande – he could be a good player for Rangers.”
