Rangers news: Iuri Medeiros told he’s ‘let the team down’ as ‘petulant’ footage analysed
Noel Whelan has slammed Iuri Medeiros for the “petulant” red card he received as Braga lost 3-1 to Rangers on Thursday night (14 April).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and Aberdeen striker compared Medeiros to a “spoilt kid” and praised the referee for sending him off.
Medeiros, 27, received two yellow cards in quick succession during extra time at Ibrox, as shown on the highlights on BT Sport’s YouTube channel.
He was initially cautioned for a challenge on Leon Balogun deep into the Rangers half and was shown a second yellow for his protesting the decision right in the face of the referee.
“It was petulant, that’s the only word I can use to describe it,” Whelan said after analysing the footage with Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“He was like a spoilt kid out in the playground. When a decision has been made, a decision has been made. It’s as simple as that.
“Going up and shouting in his face just shows that petulant side and it was probably a bit of frustration as well.
“You know you’ve already been booked so it was a little bit of stupidity too. It’s unprofessional and you’ve let your side down.
“This is where Rugby League has got it spot on. They’ve got cameras on their head so when they make a decision and you want to say something there’s a camera there recording everything.

“The referee did the right thing. There’s too much of this. It’s schoolboy football where they can’t accept a decision. Accept it, move on and get on with the game.
“You’ve let the team down, you’ve let yourself down and he’ll look back with regret.”
