Rangers news: McAvennie fumes as Ryan Kent footage analysed – ‘I can’t fathom it’

Frank McAvennie has slammed the linesman for not flagging Ryan Kent offside in Ajax’s win over Rangers on Wednesday (7 September).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker said VAR is “creating more debate than it should be”.

As shown on BT Sport (7 September), Borna Barisic had a goal disallowed for the Gers in the second half of their 4-0 defeat to Ajax.

A VAR check of the goal showed Kent was offside in the build-up to the goal.

As quoted by the Daily Record (8 September), Giovanni van Bronckhorst said his side struggled to play at the level of their Dutch opponents.

The Gers boss said it is “too much to ask” his side to compete with teams like Ajax and Liverpool.

McAvennie said the decision to let the move play out was wrong.

Kent last night, he was always offside [for the goal] and I don’t get why the linesman didn’t put the flag up,” he told Football Insider.

He was a whole body offside and its obvious. When it comes to wee decisions, and stupid decisions and how far back you should go when a foul happens. I can’t fathom it.

They’ve got to sort VAR out because it’s creating more debate than it should be.
