Rangers news: Pundit ‘genuinely shocked’ by VAR controversy after analysing footage

Rangers’ players will be “quietly confident” of progressing to the last eight of the Europa League after Friday’s draw.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Gers’ “favourable” draw.

Rangers drew FK Crvena Zvezda in Friday’s (25 February) Europa League round of 16 draw.

The Serbian side, better known as Red Star Belgrade, currently sit second in the Serbian Superliga.

Kenny insists the Gers have a great chance of progressing after dispatching Borussia Dortmund in the qualifying round.

“Any game in Europe is tough, that’s the thing,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“When I saw Rangers against Celtic I didn’t give them a hope of beating Dortmund, not a chance.

“So they have proved me wrong because what a result that is over two legs, I am genuinely shocked they got through.

“They should have won both games, the VAR decision for that third goal was ridiculous.

“They have now avoided some of the bigger teams and have drawn one of the favourable sides and, for me, they have a chance of getting into that next round.

“Rangers will be set on getting into the last eight for the first time in a while, that would be unbelievable. so they will throw everything at it.

“They have the squad to be successful so I think some of the Rangers players will be quietly confident after what I saw against Dortmund.”
