Rangers news: Pundit issues ‘big’ Alfredo Morelos verdict after contract update

Frank McAvennie has claimed Rangers no longer need Alfredo Morelos.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic and West Ham striker said “the big difference” this season is that Antonio Colak is scoring goals instead of Morelos.

Morelos, 26, was on the bench for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side against Hearts on Saturday (1 October).

He replaced Antonio Colak for the final 30 minutes of the 4-0 win and netted his second goal of the season.

Speaking to RangersReview (1 October), managing director Stewart Robertson said talks over a new contract for the striker are “ongoing”.

Robertson added that he is willing to give Morelos time to make a decision over his future.

The Colombia international has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Ibrox.

When asked if the Bears still need Morelos, McAvennie told Football Insider: “No.

I think the big difference this year is they have got somebody scoring goals. Whenever Morelos has been out or been in bother, whoever has come in hasn’t hit the ground running. Colak’s doing that.

His stats are there for everyone to see. I thought, against Hearts, he deserved to get a hattrick but he didn’t and he will be annoyed at that as a striker. He will be gutted that he didn’t get his first hattrick for Rangers.

“But then Morelos came on and scored, it just shows you he’s not going away.
