Rangers news: Pundit issues emphatic Steven Davis claim as player quotes emerge

Frank McAvennie has urged the next Rangers manager to take advantage of Steven Davis.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker slammed ex-Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst for not giving Davis more game time.

The 37-year-old’s current Ibrox contract is set to expire in the summer after signing from Southampton for his second permanent stint with the club in 2019.

As quoted by the Daily Record earlier this month (2 November), the midfielder insisted his side haven’t been good enough this season as they sit nine points behind Celtic in the league.

On 21 November, the Light Blues confirmed the sacking of Van Bronckhorst.

On Saturday (26 November), sources told this site that Sean Dyche is being seen by Ibrox bosses as an increasingly strong alternative to Michael Beale as they search for a new manager.

Dyche has held talks with the Gers board as they continue to talk to candidates about replacing Van Bronckhorst.

McAvennie insisted that whoever takes over needs to utilise Davis.

Davis keeps the ball simple, he does the simple things,” he told Football Insider.

For me, he is the catalyst in that team. You get him in and he will control the game. [James] Sands and [Leon] King have not done enough for me.

It was the manager’s fault because he was not playing Davis. If you are sitting on the bench you are thinking ‘this is horrible to watch’ and it creeps through the club.

They have wonderful players there who were not getting a game.”
