Rangers news: Pundit verdict on ‘poor’ Aaron Ramsey after Giovanni van Bronckhorst decision

Paul Robinson has leapt to Aaron Ramsey’s defence after the Rangers midfielder missed a decisive penalty in the Europa League final.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper said “you cannot criticise” the 31-year-old despite the fact it was “a poor penalty.”

Ramsey came onto the pitch with just a few minutes remaining of extra time.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst brought the Wales international on with penalties in mind as nothing could separate the Gers and Eintracht Frankfurt.

However, Van Bronckhorst’s plan backfired after Ramsey’s tame penalty was saved by Kevin Trapp to ultimately hand the trophy to the Bundesliga side.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the decision to bring on Ramsey just to take a penalty, Robinson said: “It was a poor penalty but pressure does funny things to people.

“He was six inches away from a great penalty. It would have gone over the keeper’s foot and down the middle. It was just a poorly executed penalty.

“I understand why he went down the middle because 10 time out of 10 the goalkeeper will dive in a penalty shootout. You could see exactly what he was trying to do.

“It was an easy save for Trapp in the end though. It looked poor.

“You cannot criticise Ramsey for missing. It is a difficult situation.”

Ramsey moved to Ibrox on loan from Juventus in January.

However, the centre-midfielder has struggled with injuries this season.
