Rangers news: Pundit ‘wowed’ as Scott Arfield set for axe after news from Ibrox

Alan Hutton has admitted Scott Arfield is facing the axe at Rangers following Aaron Ramsey’s arrival at Ibrox.

The former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Giovanni van Bronckhorst could shake up his tactics to play the 31-year-old in a more advanced position.

Rangers confirmed Ramsey’s capture on loan from Juventus on Monday evening (31 January).

Hutton admitted he was wowed by the Wales international’s move to Ibrox.

He suggested Arfield is in the man in the firing line for when Ramsey becomes available for the starting XI.

Asked where he sees Ramsey fitting in at Ibrox, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Wow. I mean, a player of his quality, we know what he’s capable of.

“It really depends on how Van Bronckhorst wants to play. Does he want to play a 4-2-3-1? I think that could suit him better. I like him in the attacking third of the pitch.

“He can score goals, he can see passes and he can be that difference-maker. Possibly Arfield, as well as he has done, I think you have to have competition there. You have to have different profiles of players.

“He’s very capable of playing at a high level so it comes down to how the manager sees the team lining up.

“Is he going to go 4-3-3 where he will play in midfield? Or does he change the formation where he plays in a more forward role?

“He can play a number of position. He is very technically gifted. I think he can adapt to any formation.”

Arfield has been a favourite of Van Bronckhorst since taking the reins at Ibrox.
