Rangers news: This is a ‘huge’ Kemar Roofe update – pundit

Rangers could be buoyed by a “huge boost” in next week’s Europa League final (18 May) with Giovanni van Bronckhorst hopeful of having Kemar Roofe available for selection.

That is according to former Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan, who was speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 29-year-old “natural goalscorer”.

As quoted by football.scotland (8 May), Van Bronckhorst insisted the “intention” is to have Roofe fit for the final – with the Englishman doing “everything he can” to be available.

The striker has missed the last five Rangers games – including both legs of the RB Leipzig triumph which set up next Wednesday’s showpiece against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The former Leeds forward had deputised well in the absence of Alfredo Morelos, scoring four goals in his last three outings for the Glasgow giants.

Whelan insisted Roofe will have “a massive part to play” even if he comes off the bench in Seville.

“He’s a natural goalscorer,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He has picked up the mantle superbly with Morelos out, led the line, and chipped in with some important goals.

“It was unfortunate to see him pick up the injury when he did. But to have him back for the final – wow, what a huge boost for the team and the fans.

“He’ll be doing everything he can to be ready for what is going to be a massive occasion. He’ll be wanting to stamp his authority on the game, and I think he’s got a massive part to play – even if it is from the bench.

“Looking back, you want memories in your career. This is one he will not want to miss.”

Rangers

Roofe has netted 16 goals in 35 appearances across all competitions for Rangers this term.

The hitman scored the winner in extra time during the quarter-final against Portuguese side Braga.
