Rangers player ratings v Motherwell: Senior duo 4/10 in thrilling encounter
COMMENT
Rangers maintained their 16-year unbeaten run at Fir Park with a 2-2 draw against Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday – but the Light Blues will come away from Fir Park furious with their performance after handing the hosts a point following an atrocious opening 45 minutes.
The Steelmen took a ninth-minute lead through Curtis Main’s penalty after Russell Martin was judged by Nick Walsh to have committed a foul.
The referee got the decision spectacularly wrong with the Well striker offside and the foul given particularly soft against the Gers defender.
Stephen Robinson’s side doubled their lead after 16 minutes when Allan Campbell finished off a fine move and slotted the ball low beyond Wes Foderingham.
The Gers tried to find a way back into the game before half-time but struggled to fashion any real chances to put Well keeper Trevor Carson under pressure.
Murty’s side grabbed a lifeline six minutes after the break when James Tavernier was fouled and then converted the game’s second penalty.
Just two minutes later it was level as Jamie Murphy grabbed the Gers second of the afternoon after a fantastic solo goal which the former Fir Park man finished with aplomb.
Murty’s side began to really push forward after drawing level as they looked to grab a third goal and maintain their 100% away record in 2018.
There was a late blow for the Gers when Josh Windass limped off with a little over ten minutes remaining with a knee injury.
Despite having a number of chances to complete their comeback and secure the win, Murty’s side came up short and handed Derek McInnes’ Aberdeen the impetus in the race for second in the Scottish Premiership.
