Rangers profit from major injustice as controversial James Sands footage re-analysed – Hutton

Alan Hutton has claimed Rangers were lucky to not concede a penalty against Hibernian on Thursday (15 December).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said there is no consistency in handball decisions.

Footage emerged on Twitter (15 December) of the incident in which the ball appears to hit the arm of James Sands following a Hibs corner.

Referee Nick Walsh waved away penalty claims from the visitors who went on to narrowly lose the game 3-2.

VAR official Alan Muir did not feel Walsh had made a clear and obvious error and he did not advise the on field official to have another look at the incident.

Hutton, who was at the game, said it was difficult to see the incident initially but after analysing he felt it could have been a penalty.

It was difficult instantly to have an opinion on it,” he told Football Insider.

It was not until after that I saw the incident. This is where it can become annoying.

I am not talking as a Rangers fan, it is all subjective. It looked like a handball, his arm is away from him and the ball does strike his arm.

There has been penalties given for those sort of things. People get frustrated because there is no consistency. I think that is what needs to be better.

Rangers

The victory on Thursday was Michael Beale’s first win as Rangers manager.

But, the Light Blues face an uphill battle to catch league leaders Celtic and close the nine point gap.

In other news, a pundit has suggested when Nathan Patterson will re-join Rangers as new details emerge.
