Rangers profit from ‘shameful’ decision as James Tavernier footage analysed – expert

Alan Hutton claimed Rangers benefitted from an “unlucky” handball against Aberdeen on Saturday (29 October).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender insisted the incident was a penalty but said he “feels for” the Dons’ Jayden Richardson.

As shown on Sky Sports (31 October), the ball hits off Richardson’s arm in the box following a corner for the Light Blues.

Referee Steven McLean initially waved play on but after consulting the pitchside monitor on the advice of VAR official Nick Walsh, the spot kick was awarded.

Although captain James Tavernier’s penalty was saved, the Bears still went on to win the game 4-1.

Hutton suggested it was an unlucky decision for the visitors.

Of course it is unlucky,” he told Football Insider.

It is a poor touch. It bounces up off him and it hits his hand. It is probably unfortunate that he is in the box as well.

Reading what everybody is saying, I still believe if that were anywhere on the pitch it would be given as a foul. Of course he is unlucky and he is in the box so the letter of the law says that he handballed it.

His hand was in an unnatural position and they’re going to give penalties for that. Of course I feel for him, if I was in that position I would be absolutely raging as well.

It is a poor touch that causes it so it is a shame but ultimately it is going to be given as a penalty.
