Kieran Maguire: Rangers risk financial plunge amid £28m reveal -‘they’re feeling the squeeze’

Rangers supporters are “feeling the squeeze” financially and will likely be unable to buy as much club merchandise this year as they have done previously.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the effect the cost of living crisis will have on the Ibrox club’s commercial revenue.

Rangers registered record income of £28.4million from sponsorship and merchandising in 2021-22 as the run to the Europa League finals prompted a surge in sales.

Bur as detailed by The Herald last Thursday (1 December), there is concern that the cost of living crisis could inhibit fans’ ability to buy replica shirts and other products in the coming months.

Maguire forecasts that the Glasgow giants, whose biggest commercial income stream is their kit deal with Castore, will suffer as a result.

“There is no doubt that everybody in the country is feeling th financial squeeze,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“This applies to football fans just as much as anybody else in the country.

“For Rangers, the club has a very dedicated fanbase in terms of buying merchandise.

“The impact in terms of discretionary spending on shirts is likely to hit the club as far as its top line is concerned.

“They get a significant cut of every unit sold as part of the deal with Casto. The board as well as the fanbase will therefore be looking for an improvement in the country’s finances as soon as possible.”
