Rangers senior man delivers verdict on future, six months left on deal
By Matt Farr
Rangers striker Kenny Miller is desperate to see out the remainder of his career with the club.
The veteran goalscorer is out of contract at the end of the season, and could be forced to leave Rangers for a third time in his career.
However, after coming to the rescue for Mark Warburton’s side in the Scottish Cup on Saturday, Miller has admitted he wants to end his career at Ibrox, and urged the club to extend his deal.
The 37-year-old netted twice in the final 10 minutes to help Rangers stage a remarkable comeback victory to down Motherwell, and keep their hopes of domestic glory alive in the Scottish Cup.
Speaking to the Daily Record, he said: “Everybody knows where I want to be. It’s not really in question.
“Whether it happens or not is out of my hands. I’ve spoken to the manager on a few occasions so I know his thoughts on it. We’ll see where it goes but I want to be here.
“My loyalties to Rangers are not in any doubt. I’m fully committed to this club and will be for the rest of this season with my performances, whether I’m staying or not.”
From his three different spells at Rangers, Miller has scored a total of 104 goals from 258 appearances in all competitions.
He first joined the club ahead of the 2000-01 season, but made only 38 appearances before moving to Wolves.
The 2008-09 campaign saw him return to Rangers, after a less-than-satisfactory spell with Derby during their ill-fated Premier League campaign.
He left to join Turkish side Bursaspor midway through the 2010-11 season, before later returning to Ibrox in 2014.
So far this season, Miller has seven goals from 27 appearances.
Football Insider verdict
Kenny Miller has been a superb servant to Rangers over the years, and there is only really one place where he should end his career – Ibrox. His has proven time and time again to be a match-winner, showcased yet again in Saturday’s victory over Motherwell. Rangers will be though, focused on the bigger picture, and by no means can Miller be considered a long-term asset. However, with Mark Warburton putting together a young squad, Miller’s experience and presence within the squad can be invaluable. Therefore, he should consider offering Miller an extended stay at the club – regardless of the role he may play on the pitch. Plus, Rangers aren’t exactly in the best financial shape, and could struggle to find a decent replacement.
