Rangers key man opens up about future after agreeing terms of new deal

Rangers defender James Tavernier has claimed the Ibrox giants “have the squad” to win the Scottish Premiership after committing his future to the Gers until 2021 – and revealed it is his “aim” to win the league.
The right-back believes Graeme Murty’s side are good enough to mount a serious challenge to Old Firm rivals Celtic and wrestle the league title away from them for the first time since Walter Smith’s Gers side were champions in 2011.
Tavernier has been with the Light Blues since arriving from Wigan in 2015 but has yet to lift a major trophy after helping the Gers to the Scottish Championship and Challenge Cup in his first season.
Rangers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership – 11 points off leaders Celtic – but Tavernier is confident Murty and director of football Mark Allen have put a squad together capable of toppling Celtic.
“I want to win the league. We have the fans for it, we have the squad for it,” Tavernier said, as quoted by the Gers’ official Twitter account.
“We are Rangers Football Club we have to add more trophies to our trophy room. That’s my aim.”

Tavernier has made 126 appearances for the Gers since his move from Wigan and was named captain in the Gers’ 6-1 Scottish Cup win over Ayr United on Sunday.
So far this term, the 27-year-old key man has been a mainstay in the starting XI as he and Daniel Candeias have quickly built a strong understanding down the right wing.
Tavernier has scored six times and chipped in with eight assist in his 32 appearances this season under Murty and Pedro Caixinha.
Murty’s side are back in action on Sunday when they face Hamilton in the Scottish Premiership and face a Scottish Cup quarter-final clash with Falkirk next month as the Gers look to end eight years without a major trophy.
