Rangers stars will be derailed after Connor Goldson update – McLeish

Alex McLeish has admitted Rangers would lose “momentum and stability” should Connor Goldson leave at the end of his contract this summer.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 29-year-old has become part of the “nucleus” of the squad at Ibrox.

As quoted by Football Scotland (20 May), Giovanni van Bronckhorst admitted there is only a “small chance” Goldson will extend his terms in Glasgow.

Rangers

The Gers have been in negotiations with the defender for some time but have failed to find a breakthrough.

McLeish admitted the club could be derailed, especially in defence, with an exit seemingly on the cards.

Asked what Rangers would lose by Goldson going, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “The thing they lose is momentum and stability.

“The fact that he’s been there for such a long time, he’s one of the parts of that nucleus of the team. You really want to have consistent defenders playing every week. Getting to know each other, getting to understand each other. That’s what that Rangers team has at the moment.

“Let’s face it, it’s not Giovanni’s team. There could be change ahead, he maybe has other ideas about other players coming in.

“But at the same time, it’s not broke so he doesn’t have to fix it, per se. What he can do is add to it.

“There’s so much speculation about players whose contracts are coming up that you know, for sure, there will be some bit of business done.”

Rangers

Goldson has played 222 times for Rangers across all competitions.

He made 60 appearances during the 2021/22 campaign.

In other news, expert claims Rangers already have Goldson ‘replacement’ in place as ‘meltdown’ verdict issued.
