Rangers suffer ‘huge blow’ after Cowen says he ‘wants to go to Arsenal’ – Hutton
Rangers have been dealt a “huge blow” in losing academy chief Phil Cowen.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton hailed Cowen as a top-quality talent spotter following his 15-year tenure at Ibrox in total in various roles.
As revealed by Football Insider (12 February), Cowen has started work as head of academy scouting at Premier League giants Arsenal after quitting Rangers last year.
The Ibrox academy has produced many top talents in recent years who have earned senior appearances for the club including Leon King and Alex Lowry.
Rangers lose top man to Arsenal in ‘huge blow’
However, Hutton claimed that it was understandable that Cowen wanted to seek a new challenge after his long stint in Scotland, especially considering the allure of the English top flight.
“Cowen’s been at Rangers for a long time,” he told Football Insider.
“He told them a while ago that he was planning to move on, but these things happen especially when Premier League sides come calling.
“He wants a new challenge in life so it’s understandable that he wants to go down south to Arsenal.

“He’s been a very good talent spotter for the club, so of course it’s a huge blow for Rangers.
“But I’m pretty sure they’ve got someone in to replace him who can hopefully do what he’s done for the club.”
