Rangers suffer ‘very damaging’ financial hit, potential solution to Ibrox problem shared

Rangers will need to secure extra commercial income to offset the financial hit they will take from finishing third in the Scottish Premiership this season.

That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who states that Rangers’ third-placed finish in the Scottish Premiership will be “very damaging” for the club.

Danny Rohl’s side have lost all four of their league matches since the split, and will not have the chance to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The Gers’ title challenge has badly fallen away, and either Celtic or Hearts will win the Scottish Premiership on the final day of the season.

Rohl’s position as manager is coming under increasing scrutiny, whilst Rangers will lose out financially from an unsuccessful campaign, which will end trophyless.

Rangers have ‘no hope’ of European success next season

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Rohl deserves “some credit” after Rangers’ poor start to the season under Russell Martin.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness though thinks that next season will be “very tough” for Rangers.

Total Turnover£94.1m
Matchday Income£45m
Commercial Income£24.9m
Pre-Player Trading Profit£2.7m

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s very damaging for Rangers.

“The Scottish coefficient has dropped so badly now that this gives the club that’s third really no hope. Very, very tough. And so, for Rangers it’s damaging.

“But, Rangers shouldn’t forget how bad they were earlier in the season, and we were laughing at it. We were not laughing, but we were pointing out just how bad Rangers and Celtic both were earlier in the season. They’ve made a big comeback, and so Danny Rohl deserves some credit for that.

“Rangers are going to find it tough for next season, but they’ve got to regroup, and they’ve got to find other ways to do things and get that commercial revenue up somehow. If it isn’t coming from European money they’ve got to find ways to do it.”

Danny Rohl’s future uncertain at Rangers

Wyness previously told Football Insider that he believes Rangers should stick by Rohl as manager next season, and back the German in the summer transfer window.

An increasing number of Rangers fans have been calling for the club to sack Rohl, as they have been unable to keep up their title charge in their past four matches.

Rohl will also not be a fan favourite for his treatment of James Tavernier, who was not selected to start his final home match for the club against Hibernian last time out.

If Rohl does stay in Glasgow, as Wolfsburg are said to be interested in his services, then he will need a positive start to next season to ensure he does not lose the entire fanbase.
