‘Rangers table new Samuel Edozie offer to Southampton after collapse’

Rangers have learned Southampton’s stance on a potential move for Samuel Edozie following a long-standing interest in the winger.

The Gers’ attempted signing of the 22-year-old fell through on deadline day last summer [BBC Sport], with the Man City academy product eventually joining Anderlecht for the 2024/25 campaign.

In Belgium, Edozie notched four goals and four assists in 32 appearances before returning to St Mary’s Stadium, and while some supporters are on the fence about the player, he is rather sought-after.

Russell Martin has already added Thelo Aasgaard, Emmanuel Fernandez, Joe Rothwell, and Max Aarons to the squad, with Todd Cantwell giving his stamp of approval for the latter’s arrival.

The attacking positions have not yet been addressed, however, with rumours floating around the futures of Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers, Oscar Cortes failing to stay fit, and Ross McCausland failing to impress.

Edozie could help the wide positions at Ibrox ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, but it appears that another move for the 22-year-old is far from simple, not unlike their previous attempt to capture the winger.

Rangers submit offer for Samuel Edozie

According to BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella via X (8 July), Rangers have seen their initial offer rejected for Southampton’s Edozie, who was previously a target for the Gers last summer.

Martin’s side are acting on long-term interest, with more clubs expected to join the race for the 22-year-old, who spent last season on loan in Belgium, with Anderlecht also playing Europa League football.

Football Insider verdict

With new owners, a new manager, and likely a set of brand-new players for the season ahead, supporters have every right to be excited, but only if sensible decisions are being made behind the scenes.

A series of poor decisions have seen the Light Blues fall very far behind their Old Firm rivals off and on the pitch, with Brendan Rodgers‘ side finishing 17 points ahead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Barry Ferguson attempted his best to turn the club’s fortunes around during a very short spell at Ibrox last term, even taking the Gers to the quarter-finals of the Europa League before bowing out.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Rangers are looking to sign Crystal Palace’s Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, with the winger position clearly a position that needs addressing at Ibrox.

Selling the likes of Igamane and Nico Raskin could certainly help raise some funds to get these deals over the line, and while they would be huge losses, a new era is beginning under the new manager.

There are likely to be more players following Tom Lawrence, Ianis Hagi, and Leon Balogun out of the exit doors, but it remains to be seen what Martin’s plans are for the coming weeks.
