Rangers told to appoint ‘better negotiator’ after £30m reveal – pundit

Frank McAvennie has insisted Rangers and other teams in Scottish football need a “better negotiator” when it comes to TV deals.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker said Scottish clubs are just “taking what they’re offered” when it comes to a TV deal, rather than trying to sell the final product.

Speaking to Rangers Review (22 September), managing director Stewart Robertson was shocked to discover Swedish side Malmo’s broadcast agreement was more than double the Scottish club’s.

A deal with Sky said to be worth around £30million until 2029 is now being offered to the Scottish top flight clubs, but Robertson believes the Scottish game is worth more than that.

The Light Blues’ director said that Scottish football is being undersold and insisted it is putting the clubs at a disadvantage, especially in Europe.

McAvennie agreed that the Scottish product is worth more than what it brings in at the moment.

I think they’ve got a good product in Scotland,” he told Football Insider.

Rangers

I think somebody has to step up to the TV companies. It’s not just Celtic and Rangers now, there’s a lot of good teams. I think they need a better negotiator, somebody who knows what they’re doing.

I think if they bring somebody in and does it on behalf of the club they’ll get good money. It’s as if they’re just taking what they’re offered. I think they could get a lot more money for the product in Scotland because it’s a good product but they don’t push it.
