Rangers told to appoint Derek McInnes by Celtic idol

Rangers should turn to ‘ideal candidate’ Derek McInnes if they decide to sack Philippe Clement after his underwhelming start to the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie believes the 53-year-old has ‘proven what a good manager he is’ after spells with Aberdeen and Kilmarnock and is ready to take the reigns at his former club.

McInnes masterminded a 1-0 win over Philippe Clement and Rangers on Sunday (October 20) with Marley Watkins bagging the decisive goal.

Clement’s side now sit six points behind top two Aberdeen and Celtic after failing to capitalise on their 2-2 draw on the day before.

Derek McInnes would relish Rangers chance

The Scotsman had the opportunity to take over the Glasgow club while at Aberdeen but decided against it for fear of burning bridges at the club.

With Rangers once again lagging behind Celtic on and off the pitch, they may very well come calling once again.

“He’s proven what a good manager he is”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“He would be the ideal candidate but it’s got to be on his terms and don’t know what terms they are.

“But for him to get it, he would need a better team than that.

“If he can do what he’s done with Kilmarnock, and they do have some good players, but if he can get them organised he could get Rangers organised.

“Rangers need bigger players and I don’t know if that’s on the cards so I don’t know if he would take it.

“For me, if I was a Rangers man, I’d want Derek McInnes.”
