Rangers transfer news: Pundit ‘wowed’ as £1.5m windfall all but sealed
Noel Whelan has suggested Rangers may be more ambitious in the transfer market this summer thanks to their Europa League success.
The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Ibrox board would be delighted at the prospect of going deep into the Europa League due to the financial benefits.
Rangers are well placed to reach the quarter-finals after beating Red Star Belgrade 3-0 in the first leg of their round of 16 tie on Thursday (10 March).
As detailed in official Uefa documents from May 2021, qualifying for the quarters would see the Gers earn £1.5million (€1.8million).
Whelan insisted the money earned from European exploits could change the club’s transfer approach this summer.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think financially, the further on you go in competitions like the Europa League, the more confident you get.
“The more money you’re making, the more you can go from one player and thinking well: ‘Well, actually, we might be able to get this other player. We might have the funds to be able to afford to do that.’
“It’s not just about the winning the trophy, it’s the financial element it brings to a football club as well. The players won’t worry about that, but the board definitely will.
“The board want to go out there and win trophies, that’s first and foremost in their way of thinking. Financially, what it’s going to do to the football club, they don’t really give a monkey’s.
“They’re out there to win football matches. To have medals at the end of their playing career to look back on.
“Whereas financially for Rangers, they’re looking at it and saying: ‘Wow, this is going to keep us going. This is going to keep us benefiting financially. The losses that we may have made we’re now gaining because of how far we’re going in these competitions.'”

Rangers banked around £5.3million in reward money for their record in the group stages.
Meanwhile, their win over Borussia Dortmund in the qualification play-off round earned them just over £1million.
