Rangers transfer news: Simpson tells agent to find new club after crunch Ibrox talks – sources

Jack Simpson has told his agent to find him a new club after crunch talks with Rangers over his future, Football Insider has learned.

The Glasgow giants were willing the listen to offers for the defender, 25, in January but he was unable to secure a new team despite deadline-day talks.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Simpson has had a meeting with the club hierarchy and is looking at finding a new club ahead of the summer window.

Rangers

A return down south is the most likely possibility after he came close to joining an English Championship club in January.

As revealed by Football Insider, Middlesbrough and Birmingham made contact with Rangers about late-window deals for Simpson but both left it too late and ran out of time to reach an agreement.

Simpson has struggled to make an impression since arriving from Bournemouth in January of last year.

He has made only 13 appearances for the club, six of which have come this season.

The centre-back has slipped even further down the pecking order since Giovanni van Bronckhorst replaced Steven Gerrard as manager.

Filip Helander has missed most of the season due to injury but Simpson has still not made a matchday squad since a sub run-out against minnows Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup early last month.

Rangers

Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun and Calvin Bassey are the first choice centre-backs, with January signing Jamie Sands and 18-year-old Leon King also ahead of Simpson in the pecking order.

Rangers have also planned for the future by signing John Souttar from Hearts on a pre-contract.
