Rangers TV pundit: I feel sorry for Kemar Roofe after what I’ve seen at Ibrox

Alan Hutton has insisted Rangers need to “adapt” to get the best out of Kemar Roofe as their first-choice striker.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit admitted he “feels sorry” for the 29-year-old due to a lack of “service”.

With Alfredo Morelos out injured, Roofe has started three of the Light Blues’ last four games across all competitions.

He scored a hat-trick against St Mirren before netting the winner over Braga at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Hutton admitted Rangers have had to change their style of play to feed Roofe with goalscoring opportunities.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think it’s been difficult for him. Alfredo Morelos, if he’s fit he plays. It’s quite as simple as that.

“He’s had to bide his time to be that focal striker and he has done well in certain games. Obviously against Aberdeen, scoring the winner. When he came on against Dundee he set up two goals.

“He had an opportunity there. Then he gets his first start against Celtic and it kind of bypasses him. I feel sorry for him because I think he needs the service to be better.

“He needs people round about him that are going to help him. He’s not like Morelos, he can’t occupy centre-halves. He needs bodies round about him.

“I think when you have Ramsey on the pitch, Aribo, Kent, Sakala coming in, that’s what he needs. He needs link-up play, one-twos and then he can get in behind.

“He’s an intelligent player. If you give them service in the right areas he can score goals. He’s proved that.

“There probably is a little bit of getting used to him in that number nine spot. You do have to change and adapt the way you play.”

Roofe has netted 16 goals in 34 appearances this season.

However, he has only started 16 games across all competitions.
