Rangers will fans will love Josh Windass message as he takes cheeky swipe at James McClean

Josh Windass has highlighted his love for Rangers once again, just weeks after he was linked with a potential return to his former club.

The forward notched 19 goal involvements for the Gers across the 2017-18 Premiership campaign, but hasn’t returned to Scottish football since he left to join Wigan Athletic in 2018.

Football Insider recently revealed that Wrexham have no intention of selling Windass this month, after speculation had begun to swirl regarding a potential reunion with Danny Rohl on a loan deal until the end of the season.

While the 32-year-old ultimately appears to have missed out on a return to Ibrox this month, he clearly still has the club at heart, and fans will be delighted to see that he has taken a cheeky swipe at James McClean.

Josh Windass sends message to James McClean after Wrexham exit

Windass looked primed to return to Rangers as he was left out of the Wrexham squad for their trip to face Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Day, while the speculation was still at its strongest.

However, he has since returned to the fold on matchdays for the Championship hopefuls, and any chance of a move has seemingly now evaporated.

Nevertheless, it hasn’t stopped the former Sheffield Wednesday man from demonstrating his sustained passion for Rangers.

Wrexham confirmed the departure of the controversial McClean on Saturday, as they agreed to mutually terminate his contract to allow him to join his hometown club Derry City.

Windass sent his departing teammate a message of support on his Instagram story, but cheekily included ‘WATP’ at the end of his message, in reference to the We Are The People chant that is sung at Rangers games.

McClean is a well-known Celtic supporter and hasn’t been shy to project his views over the years, so Rangers fans will be delighted to see Windass poke a little fun at him as part of his goodbye message.

Rangers right to avoid Josh Windass move in January

Rangers fans are already ecstatic about signing Andreas Skov Olsen, and that deal arguably wouldn’t have happened had they been able to land Windass as they initially intended.

The Wrexham man shares a strong relationship with Rohl after their time together at Sheffield Wednesday, and while it was no surprise to see him considered as an option, they have ultimately done the right thing by looking elsewhere.

The Premiership has progressed significantly since Windass was last involved north of the border, and Rangers need to be targeting younger players who will still have a sell-on value a few years down the line.

Windass would likely have had an impact on the squad if he had returned, but his signing would have displayed a much more short-term vision.

Instead, Rohl and Co. have already been able to bolster the group with players who have a long future ahead of them in the game and plenty of potential to unlock.
