Rangers will sell Edmundson after changing his squad number – pundit
Frank McAvennie claims there is no way back for George Edmundson at Rangers after he was loaned to Derby County on deadline day.
But the former Celtic forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted that the decision to swap Edmundson’s shirt number with new signing Jack Simpson is no big deal.
Simpson arrived at Ibrox from Bournemouth on deadline day after initially agreeing a pre-contract deal with the club earlier in the transfer window.
The former Cherries defender was handed the number four shirt upon his arrival at the club, the number which had recently been vacated by 23-year-old Edmundson.
While McAvennie isn’t reading too much into that decision, he still sees no way back at Rangers for the out of favour defender.
When asked if the squad number change was a worrying sign for Edmundson, McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “I would think so.
“You never keep your squad number anyway when you go out on loan so I wouldn’t look too much into that.
“I don’t think he’ll get back in to be honest, they’ll be moving him on and especially after winning the league they’ll be looking for a bit more quality.”
Earlier this season, Edmundson and Gers teammate Jordan Jones received lengthy bans by the SFA for breaking coronavirus protocols.
This followed a slow start to the season for the defender as he only had one Scottish Premiership appearance to his name before the ban kicked in.
In other news, Rangers have landed stunning £17.6m bounty – with more cash on the way to Ibrox.
